Character Name: Chikage Kazama
Canon: Hakuouki: Hekketsuroku (game: visual novel)
Timeline: game verse (hijikata's route) →Chapter 7
Character's Age: unknown, physically appears somewehere between mid-late twenties, possibly early thirties (... at least, on the assumption he's probably supposed to be roughly equivalent to Hijikata Toshizou)
Note: From here on out in the application, names are generally presented surname first when their full names are mentioned (which is usually just once, but still thought I should note it!)

Powers, Skills, Pets and Equipment:
Kazama is mostly gifted with the natural powers and strength of his heritage. He is a demon and a particularly powerful one at that (their bloodlines are a judgment and source of an oni's strength, and he is from a clan that's made sure it's well-bred), naturally faster and stronger than any human and able to heal from wounds quickly.

He also has a demon 'form', where his hair becomes white and his eyes yellow and he gets horns on his head, as well. In this state, it's the true form of an oni and all his above average abilities are heightened significantly.

Oni are also able to "teleport", although not through dimensions, just place to place, so he'll be restricted according to the game's rules and limitations on general teleportation powers.

Kazama is also quite skilled with a blade. While he has a clear advantage in strength and stamina and speed on a human, his blade skill is solely his own and represents a truly unnatural dedication to the art. Kazama's reasoning for becoming so skilled is never really elaborated on. He takes great pride in his ability, too, and is rarely concerned about anyone being able to stand up to him. Then again, he also can be really sloppy and lazy with his technique if he's uninterested and forced into participation.

    Items:
:. Douji-giri Yasutsuna: A katana specifically crafted to slay an oni, Kazama has managed to get his hands on it (it's hinted that the blade was somehow passed down in his family since it was also wielded by another oni in the myth).
**I am okay with the idea that the blade may or may not work as intended here. Actually, I was hoping the effects could also potentially expand to other types of demons/devils/whatevs and vampires (since the rasetsu are kind of like vampires, too...). Also hoping it could work similarly on any NPC monsters (but not a huge deal since they probably won't last long enough in a fight to really suffer from the effect). But, I'm more than fine with it being toned down in situations or even ineffective if certain players wish so. Technically, the blade isn't any more powerful than a normal blade except the steel used for it somehow negates the healing ability of demons, rasetsu included (it's like some kind of poison). I HOPE IT IS OKAY AND I WILL MAKE A PERMISSIONS POST AND ALWAYS ASK PEOPLE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. :(**

:. Western Clothing: He's lacking his traditional eastern wear, as he has like the Shinsengumi adapted to the Western influence (why, I don't know, but maybe just to make a point to blend in a little easier).

Canon History: WIKI & HAKUOUKI WIKI
↓Sadly, the wikia entires are pretty awful, but I'll try to make a brief summary of Kazama's appearances to his point in canon.

While Kazama actually appears in Hakuouki: Reimeroku, I have to be honest and say I've yet to play the game or see the anime adaptation. While he is shown to cross paths with Serizawa, I don't know the extent of his involvement. Considering when Kazama appears to the Shinsengumi in Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan he is a foreign face, it's fair to say whatever he was doing was nothing particularly history-altering.

So, we'll start with his appearance in the game Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan. When the Shinsengumi attempt to pin the location of a secret meeting of the Choushuu rebels, it is found to be Ikedaya. Okita Souji is the first member to find Kazama Chikage on an upper floor. While showing no interest in crossing blades or what his relation to the incident was, Okita resorted to the conclusion he was in league with the rebels and to be taken care of. However, Kazama appears to be a much more formidable foe than initially expected, and Kazama spends a good deal of the battle completely silent and refusing to draw his blade to stand against Okita's attacks. It's a tense but short-lived battle (better played out in the anime since if you don't take the route with Chizuru to begin with you never see what happens here, anyway) and Kazama departs as mysteriously as he appeared. At the time of the Ikedaya incident, Kazama was with another by the name of Amagiri Kyuujyu and Toudou Heisuke is the one to confront him. Both Okita and Heisuke are left severely injured from their respective encounters.

Kazama's next appearance is to Hijikata Toshizou and Shinpachi Nagakura (and Yukimura Chizuru, if you take her that route) at Mt. Ten'nou where it's confirmed he is working with the Satsuma and Choushuu rebels, although who he is and why is left unknown. He briefly stands in the way of Hijikata when the rebels retreat to take their own lives instead of suffer the dishonor of being slaughtered, and does not seem to understand Hijikata's passion about not allowing them the priveliage of commiting seppuku. It's another short encounter, but Kazama delays the group long enough that the rebels that were originally being pursued are found dead by the time the Shinsengumi find them.

Kazama shows up once again, this time during the night at headquarters when the Shinsengumi are given the task of protecting the Shogun, although this time with two others. They appear to Chizuru alone, and it's here that it's revealed that Kazama and the other two are oni, and they are there with interest in Chizuru herself, rather than the Shogun. They linger only long enough to confirm Chizuru's heritage as an oni as well, Kazama promising to return for her and leaving the Shinsengumi baffled at the presented information and the resulting position. (Shiranui Kyo is the third member that accompanies Kazama, and Amagiri is the other and Saitou Hajime and Sanosuke Harada briefly confront them (Saitou: Amagiri & Shiranui: Sanosuke) and Hijikata stands against Kazama himself.

He again appearance to Chizuru one point while she is alone doing chores in the Shinsengumi HQ. Although, he's not there to retrieve her, he simply questions her choices of being so willing to stay with humans, especially ones that apparently treat her similar to a slave, according to him. Before they can really have much of a dialogue, the Shinsengumi appear to protect Chizuru, but Kazama disappears without a fight.

It's not until some time later (mid 1867, Chapter 3 in game) that Kazama actually makes a serious attempt to take Chizuru from them. It's here that the three demons demonstrate just exactly how powerful and dangerous they are, standing against both the Shinsengumi captains as well as the rasetsu unit San'nan has created for certain tasks. Their distaste of the Shinsengumi using the ochimizu becomes apparent as well as their discontent with its existence in general, although they seem to prove little match for the three even in numbers. However, Kazama and Hijikata engage in a rather heated battle, one that Kazama overpowers the Vice-Commander and almost delivers a fatal blow. He's saved by Chizuru's interference (at least, in the route/situational history I'm pulling Kazama from, see the note below for more information) and he questions her willingness to give her life for a human. Nevertheless, it becomes very clear to Kazama that Chizuru has no interest in leaving the Shinsengumi and while Kazama doesn't really feel ready to stop his pursual of her (after all, why would she ever reject him like this unless she lacks the knowledge of just how amazing and perfect he is...!) he does bitterly accept the obvious choice between himself and Hijikata. (He leaves very annoyed and abruptly with the other two, after Shiranui even slides a slap comment about Chizuru shooting Kazama down pretty obviously and harshly. Kazama just states he's tired and that they're leaving).

He shows up one more time in pursual of Chizuru, cutting down a dearly loved Shinsengumi Member (Inoue) who attempts to stand in his way. Chizuru is clearly outmatched even as she tries to get revenge for what Kazama did, but before she can be taken Hijikata appears. While it's Chizuru's predicament and Inoue's death that drive Hijikata into a rage to fight with Kazama, the fight only ends with Hijikata becoming a rasetsu (drinking the ochimizu in desperation to not lose against Kazama when he reveals his true form), another loved Shinsengumi member (Yamazaki) sacrificing himself to protect Hijikata, and an extremely enraged Kazama promising another encounter where he will kill Hijikata in the most painful way possible (for managing to cut his face!!).

However, Kazama's next appearance is quite some time later and by accident during the Shinsengumi's attempt to take Utsunomiya Castle. Kazama's there on his own business (again, unknown—although their involvement with the Satsuma and the Choushuu before was actually only to pay a debt owed), but seeing Hijikata throws everything else to second priority. They fight and Kazama manages to severely injure HIjikata. While being a rasetsu now, Hijikata's wounds should have been able to heal quickly, it's revealed that Kazama has obtained a blade made for slaying oni particularly to kill Hijikata. It leaves Hijikata severely wounded, and Kazama gloats over the situation only for his opportunity to kill Hijikata (remember, he wanted to do it slowly and painfully) to be foiled by a fire breaking out, Amagiri's constant insistence for Kazama to leave with him and stop being a moron about his crazy obsession with hijikata and Hijikata's own forced retreat that he disappears from Hijikata and Chizuru's lives again until a later date.

However, he'll be taken from sometime after this point, so the rest is not necessary to be known. :)

・**NOTE: I thought it would be fair just to mark certain points that I'm assuming have transpired for Chikage up to where he's been taken from since there are some events that happen or don't happen the same way depending on what choice the player makes for Chizuru in game. Since he is coming from later in the game, he is also tied to the events of a particular suitor's route. Chikage will be taken from Hijikata Toshizou's route (due to be the main male lead + their relationship is something fierce in that route) there are some events that can or can't happen particularly and is best to make note of. While these are not all the little twists and turns, they are of important events particularly having Chizuru at a certain time in a certain place.
1.) When Chikage and Okita Souji cross paths in Ikedaya, Chizuru does come to interfere between the two of them.
2.) Next, Chizuru accompanies Hijikata to Mt. Ten'nou where Chizuru again meets Chikage (and Hijikata meets him for the first time).
3.) He does visit Chizuru when she is alone cleaning and doing chores around Shinsengumi HQ. He questions her briefly, not understanding her desire to stay with individuals who treat her in such a way (he makes it out to suggest she's a slave to them, which is absolutely unacceptable considering her lineage as an Oni herself) but retreats relatively easily when the Shinsengumi show up to defend Chizuru.
4.) During the second raid on Shinsengumi HQ (in Chapter 3, I believe around summer 1867...) Chizuru ends up jumping in the way to protect Hijikata when Chikage gains the upper hand on him during their fight and almost kills the Vice-Commander. Chizuru's interference causes Chikage to halt his actions and he questions her actions, where he ultimately acknowledges her wishes (that is, he realizes she has chosen between him and Hijikata and Hijikata is the one she chooses), albeit begrudgingly so. He leaves with his two comrades without further consideration.
5.) Kazama crosses blades with Hijikata after cutting down Inoue as he tried to protect Chizuru from him. He reveals his true form in the fight with Hijikata, but in turn Hijikata drinks the ochimizu in a desperate attempt to prevail in the conflict. While it does even the odds quite a bit, Hijikata becomes engulfed in the battle to the point he becomes unnecessarily reckless. It's unknown if Hijikata would have suffered defeat at the hands of Kazama, but Yamazaki interferes and takes a blow meant for the Vice-Commander. The battle is broken at that time, but it's clear the situation is far from over between them.
6.) Kazama next appears in Hijikata's route at Utsunomiya Castle. This time Kazama is equipped with Douji-giri Yasutsuna, a sword made specifically for the slaying of oni with sole purpose to use it on Hijikata. It works, rendering Hijikata's healing abilities useless and badly injuring him. However, a fire breaks out and between Amagiri pulling Kazama away and Hijikata being pulled in the other direction, they separate.

Personality:
Every story needs an antagonist to stand in the way of the hero and/or heroine's goal. Hakuouki is no exception and the usual main antaognist towards the heroine (Yukimura Chizuru) and her chosen hero is Kazama Chikage. It's important to know that "usual" is used to describe his position and that it important. As an otome game where the player can choose from a handful of male suitors to build a relationship leading into romance, the game's story "splits" in varying directions. Not only is it that some events happen differently by choices or results over choices in favor of one particular suitor, the entire story eventually diverges into its own within the game. The branches present events and opportunities differently and Chikage himself is subject to these changes, as well. Depending on which route is taken, he can be anywhere from completely vile (for example: there is a bad end in Harada's route where Chikage catches Chizuru by herself. The player is left only with a few sentences from Chizuru's sorts claiming she cannot speak of what happened nor how she lived her life after) to even an unlikely ally (In Toudou Heisuke's route, Chikage is actually assisting Heisuke in order to stop another antagonist).

And while Chikage has his own "route", it's very short, although a definitely softer side of him is shown that completely contrasts his personality from what is seen in other routes (so while we have the bad ending in Sanosuke Harada's route, there is a point in Chikage's where he assures Chizuru that he will not do anything to her until they are married). Chikage's personality is also explored more through his own drama cd release and has shown him to be more than a typical antagonist. He is generally resonable and levelheaded, not to mention a very deep thinker despite his outward presentation. While his ideas and goals seem to be narrowly driven, it's safe to say that he considers his actions far beyond the immediate consequence or what he simply claims to be the case. While he is spoiled and selfish, believing he deserves and will have anyting he desires without question, he rarely does things solely for his own benefit.

Hijikata's route is the main route for the game, however, so the character presentation will lean towards how he has been shown to act in that route in particular.

If one were to look at Chikage and his personality and traits, he would be a perfect example of a result stemmed from privileged and spoiled upbringing. He looks down upon those he does not consider worth to stand with him as equals and is arrogant, brash, and downright nasty towards them and the value of their lives. His pride concerning honor and the survival of his clan (the oni in general as they are dying out) suggests heavy loyalty having surrounded him constantly since he was a child and in constant sight and sound of the humans he has grown to hate so much. His automatic right-to-authority (take what he wants, do what he wants, etc.) points to most likely a child left without wants or needs.

It doesn't stop there, however. When Chikage is first introduced (depending on what choices the player makes, this is in Ikedaya during the raid where Okita is fighting with him), he acts in a manner refusing to acknowledge Okita's existence. He says nothing despite Okita's demands and even refuses to unsheath his blade to entertain any sort of battle engagement. He is able to block every single blow thrown at him using the sheathed blade defensively, and all the while he's doing this, it can been seen that his movements are sluggish and downright lazy at best. This has nothing to do with his skill, but rather his disinterest in most and his constant companion known as his ego. To Chikage, it is a waste of time and energy to bother with those who are not worthy. He also tends to be a sore loser, at first (the best example of this is when he comes for Chizuru at the Shinsengumi HQ and he and Hijikata get into a battle where Chizuru gets in the way to defend Hijikata from Chikage's blade—it's there that he questions her loyalities and devotion and upon seeing her make her choice between him and Hijikata, he backs off, claiming "I'm tired." to his companions and they leave without a second thought, the fight left hanging and otherwise unconcluded.)

Also, it's pretty important to note that he has about as much of an attention span as a flea unless given reason for otherwise.

With these highly negative traits ingrained within him (superiority, judgment, laziness, disrespect for those he cannot view as decent living things) it's little wonder to come to the conclusion that there is something heavy and dark being suppressed inside of him. Opponents bore him to the point he cares more about having to put the effort into cleaning the sword after making a kill blow (...that and he is well aware of the humiliation presented when one wishes to engage in battle and their opponent cares not to out of lack of respect) than ending a confrontation swiftly. In fact, Chikage seems to lack understanding of basic interaction and cares little about anything in his life up until a certain point in the game. The problem is that when he finally does come to be willing to give a shit, it skyrockets to an extreme.

When Chikage's interest is sparked, it becomes unnaturally focused; his movements suddenly lose the heavy and unskilled maneuvering he's used on so many others, and his cruelty and temper can appear. He can be a ruthless killer and even take joy out of seeing something step out of line with him only for him to slam them back into their place. The disrespect is usually almost always still there, still unwilling to accept that he has met a match or someone capable of obtaining his respect (at least, concerning humans and he seems to have to deal with a lot of them during this game...). His temper is easier to rile and no matter how skilled his opponent is, the idea of them being able to even touch him is inconceivable to him (and the fact Hijikata manages to in his route drives Chikage mad).

Chikage's methods of and reasons for killing vary. Sometimes it is swift and clean, other times it is violent and dripping with gore. Which variation is presented and executed depends on the current mood he is in (and who the opponent is). And sometimes he just avoids the violence all together.

It's also made clear that he really really (...really...) despises humans. His prejudices are not without reason, however, humans being responsible for the decline of the oni race. It's humans who have destroyed and murdered and ruined everything around them, made life difficult for everything and everyone else as well as themselves and, from Chikage's point of view, no good can come from them. As a result, they are considered little more than insects not worthy of his attention, content to let them slaughter each other into extinction.

At least, that's how it was until he met Hijikata Toshizou.

His relationship and views concerning Hijikata move from disregard and apathy to interest (his skill and determination despite being human) and jealously (over Chizuru's choice) as well as eventual obsession with the man himself due to his ability to actually stand toe to toe with Chikage. This happens particularly in a battle where Hijikata not only confronts Chikage once more to protect Chizuru, but takes the "ochimizu" (a "medicine" that basically turns humans into what they call raesetsu, kind of like vampire-demon wannabes for a lack of a better explanation, that eventually go insane from their blood lust. However, prior to that they gain enhanced abilities that allow them power potential similar to an oni) to be able to better his chances as he also seeks revenge for one of his slain men.

Hijikata shows that even Chikage has a point where he can delve from his morals and goals. By the end of the game, Chikage has conciously sacrificed everything for a chance to have a final battle with the man. He's sacrificed the most important things to him (his own pride and his clan—and with Chikage's values and reasons built so heavily on his want for the oni to regain their power and prosper and see humans subsequently disappear) for the chance, which means that dueling with Hijikata to settle things becomes his end all and be all in life.

And that final battle reveals something else about Chikage; and that is that Chikage is actually able and afterall willing (despite what has been hinted to us throughout the route) to give respect and recognition to those who fight for it and deserve it. While Hijikata is perhaps the only one to obtain this from him, it still shows a very particular character point that his intolerance is not absolute and his ideals and opinions are changeable depending on the courses that are taken.

Chikage is also very protective of those he feels he wants to be protective of. His clan means something to him, and while he "cares" (in a basic general sense of the word) for and respects other oni, he expects them to live by the same virtues of oni pride that he himself holds to. If anther oni defies this ideal, they are considered as disposable as any human, particularly if they are putting someone in danger that Chikage may care about (it's... hard to tell if he actually cares about any one individual, even in his own clan—as mentioned above, that type of care is more of as a whole rather than to any one individual). Regardless of his interest and intent for Chizuru (basically, he takes interest in her being from an extremely powerful oni family and wishes to mate with her because it is said if two powerful demons produce offspring, the children will surpass their parents in power. ...Considering Chikage's whole goal with this is to actually restore the oni race into a position of power after human damage and corruption that has caused the oni to flee into the shadows, it's really hard to say that he pursues Chizuru out of any sense of romantic infatuation or care), he does eventually come to show signs that he is concered with her wellbeing and respects her wishes (that he can't understand) even without going the path of his route in game. For one, he refuses to cause harm to her and he is quick to take care of anyone else (oni or human) who may try to do so on their own, regardless of their reasoning.

Perhaps the only other person that he holds in potential "caring standards" would be Sen, the oni princess. Outwardly, Chikage appears to hold her actions and interference as being a nuisance and she responds with sharp words defining his lack of importance to her (which is something of a jab considering how powerful his family is). However, it is shown that while Sen warns the Shinsengumi and Chizuru not to underestimate Chikage's power and drive, she has little issue bossing him around or even trying to meddle with his actions subtly. While Chikage outwardly doesn't approve of her actions at all (he even goes as far as to call her a bitch after one incident where she shows up and slaps him with a fan when he's about to come on to Chizuru), he also never shows any interest in even considering raising a blade to the princess (and she isn't even a pureblooded oni, herself, and as said before it is not out of his personality to kill other oni if he deems it reasonable). While Sen does her best to protect Chizuru from him by offering her safetly, she never directly interferes with any of his attempts to snatch Chizuru from the Shinsengumi (instead she tries to persuade her during more indirect times, such as after a confrontation or before another one ends up occurring). The two of them are stubborn to a point that neither of them to can really seem to see eye to eye, although anything further revealing the true nature of their relationship is never really explored in the game or anime due to their respective roles in the story.

(In Heisuke's route, however, Sen plays a much more prominent role in the plot as well as to Chikage. She actually offers to switch places with Chizuru to protect her and suffers dearly for it. Sen also in this path offers herself to Chikage due to his constant pursuing of Chizuru due to her strong bloodline. Although Sen herself is not a pureblood, her heritage is "famous enough" that it will at least appease Chikage (...or something). She also tells Chizuru she feels it's her responsibility to do what is best to make sure the bloodline survives, but it's clear she is unhappy about the idea of living her life out with someone she doesn't love. I actually never played this route, but it seems that Chikage not only accepts her offer but comes to actively care for her considering he ends up leaving Chizuru alone and he's actually allied with Heisuke to deal with his antagonistic situation in his route.)

And now for something that's a little contradictory. For all of Chikage's obsessions and lack of issue to raise a blade to those who stand in his way, he is actually very against the idea of war. Part of his distaste for humans comes from their war mongering, and Chikage even retreats in one situation where he takes Chizuru to see the sakura trees blossom. The Shinsengumi appear to take Chizuru back and are ready to fight for her, but he simply claims that it's unfit to fight under the sakura trees and dismisses himself, showing some kind of revernce to the land itself. (It's actually pretty ironic, too, because in Hijikata's route, he and Chikage end their conflict under the sakura blossoms and Chikage is the one to actually bestow the title "Hakuouki" to Hijikata.)

In the end, Chikage can be summed up as someone who is generally disconnected from the events and the world surrounding him, having little agency to actively engage in matters that do not concern him. He usually keeps to himself, his pride usually being the only advocating factor in making him act (such as fufilling a debt to even humans that he overall despises) any one way or another—or even at all—in the first place. There's too much out there and too much for him to observe or otherwise consider that makes the idea of actively seeking out one person or instance to pour his dedication and energy into almost impossible.

    Almost.

Therefore, if (and it is a very big if) his attention, interest, ambition or any other type of positive or negative emotion is pulled by a situation or another correctly, he can completely change his attitude towards an individual without hesitation. Whether or not that is good or bad for what or for whom is successful in garnering his normally absent focus depends on too many variables to accurately judge what he'll do and to what extent—whether the individual(s) involved be human, oni, or otherwise.

What can be taken away from all of this? While a complete wild card he may just surprise you yet. /o/

Why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
While Hakuouki itself is an otome game (basically, a dating visual novel), it's a pretty serious and grim storyline depending on which routes you take. On the darker side, it deals with things such as violence, betrayal, death, war, human experimentation, vampire-type creatures, and more. It's also set in an actual historical war which was a very turbulent time for Japan.

For one, past the story being generally serious (it has it's moment like others, but!), all the expected horrors of events are experienced, even for ones like Kazama who ultimately mostly avoid participating in the act. Kazama has seen a lot since his childhood and with him being an oni himself, monsters or other creatures would not intimidate him much or otherwise scare him. He is also able to stand his ground in a battle, even if it his victory is not certain (unlike some arrogant individuals who become afraid when they realize they have underestimated something or someone). He's also very observant, meaning he'd take notice of little things that could/would help or hinder his experience in Anatole.

Kazama's also is very reserved in his personality. It takes quite a bit for him to react in any way at all, but even moreso to successfully bother him. While he could be considered a loner (and thus get into trouble with the dangers Scorched presents ICly), he has no problems with "team efforts" if they are necessary. Kazama's power and status in canon also suggests not much will actually scare him even if it's unfamiliar to him (basically, he's pretty desensitized to fearing in terms of survival).

Kazama also understands what it means to survive and how to survive, no matter the odds. His entire mindset is driven by the desire to see his species flourish once again rather than die out. Likewise, the dangers of being a species targeted and otherwise hunted has given him many experiences concerning survival most would never have a real opportunity to experience. And even though it is safe to assume Kazama lived a relatively safe life while growing up, judging from his intelligence (he seems to have some military knowledge, but his activities are not fleshed out enough to really tell much) and weapon skills it was definitely beaten into his head every waking second of what could happen at any moment.
